High magnetization results for the NPs (e.g., 6.676 emu g -1 at 300 K and 184.449 emu g -1 at 2 K in the applied magnetic field from +50 to -50 kOe) and NCMs promises their uses in many photonic and biphotonic applications including magnetic resonance imaging, etc. In addition, magnetic properties of GdF 3:Tb 3+ nanoparticles (NPs) and GdF 3:Tb 3+-GO NCMs are also studied at room temperature (300 K) and very low temperature (2 K). For example, the excitation spectrum of Ce 3+ is higher-energy shifted when GO is attached. Our study shows that GO controls the size of the NCMs however, it can tune the luminescence properties too. Here the IL is used as a solvent, templating agent, and as a reaction partner for the nanocomposite synthesis, that is, "all three in one". Innovative nanoengineering using a task-specific ionic liquid (IL), namely, 1-butyl-3-methyl tetrafluoroborate, allows one to access a unique class of luminescent nanocomposites formed between lanthanide-doped binary fluorides and graphene oxide (GO). The ward prefect elections were postponedMarch 2002 : Scuffle broke out between two unions during the election of the prefect of ward number oneJuly 2002: A union opposed setting up of coaching classes for students by another union.Graphene oxide-based nanocomposites (NCMs) exhibit diverse photonic and biophotonic applications. Students demonstrated at the college gate the next dayJanuary 2002 : A union member was beaten up with bricks near the hostel. He had to be rushed to the Calcutta Medical CollegeDecember 2001: Scuffle broke out between students during ward elections in the hostel. I hope that better sense prevails among students, said Satya Sadhan Chakraborty, minister, higher education. The recent clashes at Hindu HostelAugust 2001: A student tried to commit suicide after a volleyball match between ward number 5 and 6. “I am waiting for the decision that will be taken after the Teachers’ Council meeting. But senior CPI(M) leaders admit that it is virtually impossible as most toprung leaders have graduated in politics from the same campus. The need to strip Hindu Hostel of its political colours is being felt even in the corridors of Alimuddin Street. We even submitted a deputation but the principal refused to budge, said Jishnu Dasgupta, convenor, IC.According to students, boarders of Eden Hindu Hostel are still guided by strong politically motivated students. The principal was gheraoed again and Presidency College was declared closed. It was decided that Sarkar would be suspended for 15 days and submit a written apology to the principal for his misbehaviour.“The apology never came and we decided to agitate. Later, IC members gheraoed the principal demanding that Sarkar be punished immediately. Pushpal was allegedly beaten up by Ankush Sarkar, an SFI member and a third year student. Ghosh apparently went around telling the guardians of the new boarders that they should discourage wards to join the SFI. Situations had taken a turn for the worse after SFI came to power after around two decades. On Monday, Pushpal Ghosh, an IC member, decided to do things rather differently. Most students admitted that it was a minor scuffle between two students which was “unnecessarily blown out of proportion.Hindu Hostel sees a mad scramble among IC and SFI at the time of admissions to bring in freshers to their fold. “Even if there’s a minor scuffle between rival unions in the hostel, it snowballs into a major conflict on Presidency College campus. In 90 per cent of the cases it becomes a prestige issue between the unions, said Deep Narayan Chakraborty, a third year PG student and a Hindu Hostel boarder. I have already apologised for the misbehaviour of our member, said Sujoy Ray, general secretary, Presidency College, Students Union. Most students admitted that Hindu Hostel was enjoying an “undeserved status in Calcutta University politics. All this to appease the students and to restore their tainted image. Both Independents’ Consolidation and the Students Federation of India said they had actually asked the principal not to close down the college for a “minor incident at Hindu Hostel.“We don’t want the college to be closed due to what happened at the hostel. Students are reportedly angry with the boarders of Hindu Hostel where a scuffle between two students forced the principal to close down the college on Thursday.Pushed to the wall, both the unions pressed the authorities to reopen the college on Friday. TANMAY GHOSH AND SOUMYADIPTA BANERJEEThe Presidency College impasse has thrown open the flood-gates of student politics.
